Jasmine Madhani (IBDP Coordinator & HOD Mathematics)

The IBDP is about the holistic development of students: helping students learn how to learn, how to analyze, how to reach considered conclusions about humankind, its language and literature, its ways in society, and the scientific forces of its environment. IB Diploma fosters a kind of independence, an interdisciplinary style of thinking and questioning that creates worldly scholars and global citizens. For this reason, the IB diploma is widely recognized by universities around the world as a symbol of academic excellence and one of the strongest educational experiences available in secondary education today.
In the first semester of this academic year, our diploma program students got many opportunities to display their talent. Whether it was by inter-school football matches, Hindi Diwas, Teachers’ day celebration or by showcasing team-spirit through the International award for Young people (IAYP) activities, MUN and the International Global Citizen Awards. Our students have demonstrated that SIS extends beyond the classroom.
Students of UD also engage in a Community, Action and Service (CAS) program as part of the IB Diploma. The CAS program leads to many powerful experiences for the students at SIS. The focus of this program is on developing themselves through activities and in serving the wider community. This semester, students organized various other CAS projects such as ‘Clean up Juhu beach’ project to spread awareness to keep public places clean, to keep up Diwali spirit UD students conducted a special collection drive of useful commodities to distribute for the tribes staying in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

From the IB requirement perspective- TOK presentations, World Literature Paper, Hindi and Spanish Orals and English IOC are completed by  Grade 12. Now the work is on with regards to other IB requiremenst such as  extended essay and TOK paper followed by internal assessments. We will be needing parental active support ensure that the deadlines are met and all the students are on task! The christmas break needs to be fruitfully utilised by the students to collect additional primary data, if required, for the extended essay. All the  TOK and CAS reflections should be also over during this break as we will be checking that in the ManageBac software.
Further, students also received the opportunity to interact with university representatives in the first semester to discuss career goals. Among the universities that visited were the University of Toronto, S.P. Jain Center of Management having campuses in Dubai and Singapore, University of East Anglia, Simon Fraser University and Bristol University UK. The various representatives gave insightful information on programs offered, scholarship opportunities and tips on application processes.

Finally, SIS is the member of the IB Virtual World Community, we believe this would give a new spin to student, teacher and school collaborations. We intend to take off in this area with all seriousness in the next semester.
Opportunities such as these are only possible because of the dedication, commitment and cooperation from the Head of School, Principal, Teachers and Students. I sincerely thank our faculty for all the help and support they give to each and every student at SIS.
